Out of town shopping is even better when it’s on the farm and that doesn’t mean you’ll be coming home with just chutney and cheese!
Winner of the Lancashire Tourism Awards Retail Award (2013 and 2014) Cedar Farm Galleries
near Chorley, just off junction 27 of the M6, through pretty villages and leafy lanes, where high fashion, contemporary design and creative crafts nestle comfortably in a stressfree shopping oasis.
In 1998, when the redundant farm buildings were first transformed into art@cedarfarm, the planning permission stipulated that everything sold on-site had to be made in the building and today, in the busy studios, you’ll find some of the best British designers, artists and makers around.
Take Heather Scott, for example, a first class honours graduate in jewellery design and metalwork from the University of Central Lancashire. Heather uses traditional gold and silversmithing techniques
to bring her organically inspired designs to life, from the much soughtafter bumblebee range to the so-on-trend stag’s head with perfectly detailed antlers. Just across the way, step into Slyglass where artists Stephen and Léona Lindars collaborate on fine glasswork, from beautifully designed scent bottles to incredible wall art; complex and multilayered, these masterfully crafted panels, original ‘paintings’ in glass, are a considered purchase but one that will colour and enhance your home for
years to come.
Don’t forget to bring the kids along; they’ll love dashing around the outdoor play area, riding wooden tractors, hiding in underground dens and wicker tepees. If they also have crafty ‘itchy’ fingers then make sure you pre-book for a workshop in the Wickerfish Art Studio or with Julie Langan Glass in The Pig Barn.
You’ll be amazed at the variety of events and activities for all ages and there’s even a beauty spa. After all that you’ll be ready for one of the best coffees around, from onsite roastery Roberts & Co or maybe even a spot of lunch in the Cafe@Cedarfarm. With the tastiest selection of quiches and salads, daily specials and an array of mouth-watering cakes and desserts, the cafe’s relaxed vibe is the perfect spot to consider your next purchase. Is it the Neal’s Yard essential oil from Anise? Or the Klimtinspired silk scarf from Joanne Eddon? Or that beautiful jacket from Etcetera, where renowned clothing labels and accessories vie for your attention?
Whatever your shopping taste or artistic leanings, the regular exhibitions, hands-on workshops, resident artists and the wide range of specialist shops make Cedar Farm an inspirational shopping experience that will have you coming back for more. And yes, you can still go home with cheese and chutney, of the homemade and artisan variety, from the excellent Food Shop!
