Work has started on a new £62m seafront at Blackpool. The government-funded scheme in Blackpool is the biggest civil engineering programme even undertaken in the resort.
The system would protect waterfront properties and create a "unique seafront experience", the council said.
Blackpool councillor Fred Jackson said: "It is great to see this work starting to mark the beginning of a really exciting time for the town."
The Central Seafront scheme, which is being led by ReBlackpool, Blackpool’s Urban Regeneration Company, and Blackpool Council involves the construction of a new seawall in addition to the remodelling of the seafront and could culminate in the construction of the People’s Playground.
The funding will provide areas of soft landscaping and enhancement facilities for people to linger and enjoy the promenade. Further work will also be completed on three separate pedestrian tramway crossings and one highway and tram crossing enabling safer pedestrian movement between the promenade, hotels and shops.
The ‘People’s Playground’ project will embrace 3km of new seafront in Blackpool creating a dynamic new spectacle designed to stop people in their tracks and enjoy a series of new attractions.
