Burnley Walking Festival 2010

Welcome to Burnley’s third walking festival we hope you will come along and join us to discover this hidden part of Lancashire. Wild moorland, wooded glens, historic townscapes, wildlife, windmills and stunning works of art can all be found on the walks on offer.

A highlight of the festival is the Burnley Way Challenge, a 40 mile walk completed over three days. Join our walk leaders to discover a landscape rich in history, wildlife and stunning views.

Come along and enjoy this exciting weekend with us, you can choose to join any of the walks below (Please choose carefully as some of the walks are more strenuous than others), they are all free and everybody is welcome.

Cliviger Gorge Circular – ‘Below the Pike’ - a ramble through the Cliviger Gorge to Walk Mill, Holme Chapel and along the Pennine Bridleway.


The Three Ways Walk - exploring the beautiful countryside around Gawthorpe Hall criss-crossing the Burnley Way, Bronte Way and Pendle Way.


Towneley Ghost Walk - ghost stories, boggarts and supernatural happenings retold to thrill the whole family.


Padiham Linear Park – explore the newly opened Padiham Linear Park and Lowerhouse Lodges.


Guided Towpath Walk through the Weavers’ Triangle – history, heritage and a step back into Burnley’s past.


Ponies and Puppies – bring your dogs for a walk and meet the rescued horses and ponies enjoying life at HAPPA.


The Gorple Ruin – a moorland stroll up onto the Gorple Ruins with stunning view over Burnley.


The Valley of the Goblins – an historic walk through Thursden Valley and Briercliffe.


Greenway Walk – along the Padiham Greenway via Padiham town centre and the Leeds and Liverpool Canal.


Hurstwood Ramble – an evening walk up to the reservoirs and through the woodlands around this Elizabethan village.


Woodlands and Waysides – enjoy the wildlife on a stroll through the woods and along the Brun Way to Netherwood and Rowley.


Evening Woodland Bird Chorus – learn to identify the evening songs of our native birds as the come home to roost.


Heritage Unveiled – the podcast walk – through the historic woodlands and beautiful parkland surrounding Towneley Hall


Bat Walk – join our expert as he takes you on a night time foray to uncover the secret world of bats


Burnley Cemetery Walk – learn about the people whose lives shaped the history and heritage of Burnley.


Kettledrum Derby – a hike across the moors surrounding Worsthorne village finishing at the Kettledrum pub for a refreshing drink and a bite to eat.


Duck Walk – come along and learn about the ducks that make their home in Thompson Park.


Spring Wildflowers of Towneley Park – as the spring flowers come into their own find out all about them from our expert ranger.


All the walks are led by experienced walkers or guides who know the area very well, you may learn about the history of the town or the wildlife around, about the plants and trees along your walk or how the people shaped the area, whatever you learn, whatever you see we hope you enjoy the walking festival and go home with good memories of Burnley.
