Lunchtime Concert: Sue Parish and her Musicians

Launching the 10th Lancaster Jazz Festival will be Sue Parish, accompanied by superb jazz musicians Vinny Parker on piano and Dave Turner on bass. The concert will feature well-loved songs from the last century, written by Gershwin, Porter, Arlen and others. Sue Parish is a jazz singer with a wonderfully versatile voice who delights in exploring a song lyrically and harmonically. Sue first heard jazz in her twenties when an Ella Fitzgerald record changed her life! Singers Nina Simone, Anita O-Day, Blossom Dearie and Peggy Lee also provided inspiration and a few years later, Sue discovered Lancaster’s thriving jazz scene and started exploring her own voice. She has since sung in vocal harmony groups, ‘trad jazz’ bands, quintets and large community ensembles. Her favourite setting at present is working as a soloist with smaller groups which offer plenty of space for creativity and spontaneous interaction between the performers. Sue has appeared at jazz venues across the northwest, as well as being a regular at Lancaster’s own annual festival. Dave Turner (bass) - Dave's warm, eloquent and often witty bass playing has made him a mainstay of the North West jazz scene and a key member of the Royal Northern Big Band. Other recent gigs have included sessions with top frontmen Mark Nightingale and Andy Panayi. Vinny Parker (piano) - Vinny is in constant demand by audiences and fellow musicians for his harmonic dexterity and sparkling rhythms. His lifelong contribution to the North West jazz scene has also seen him play with top British and American names including Pete King, Scott Hamilton and Sonny Stitt.
