New for 2008 - Blackpool Illuminations

After last year's successful launch of coach guides for groups visiting the Lights, Blackpool Illuminations is building on this with more initiatives for groups and visitors to make the Illuminations experience even more special.

Experts will be on hand throughout the Illuminations season, from Friday 29 August to Sunday 2 November, offering a personal insight into everything you ever wanted to know about the history and making of the Lights.

New for Groups

This year, the Illuminations are giving coach parties the chance to have their very own Guide for the 2008 Illuminations show not just on coaches, but guides will be also be available for talks at hotels for those groups wishing to see the Lights on foot, tram or car, so they don't miss out on the experience.

New Attractions

Venus Reborn

For the second year running, celebrity designer and television presenter Laurence Llewelyn-Bowen has created something really special for Blackpool. Venus Reborn is the first 'theatre tableau' to be created for the Promenade Illuminations show and features a 15-minute show of sound, light and water effects, culminating with the physical appearance of Venus along with a special Blackpool surprise!

Local Heads

As the winning design from last year's nationwide competition, this is the first feature that will include members of the public to achieve their 15 minutes of fame! 288 people from across the UK will have the opportunity to see their 'head' in this colourful portrait-based installation. Visually influenced by 60's pop art, the concept comprises of 288 'heads' to form a vista of posterised portraits with each section being displayed in its own unique way stretching along the Promenade.

Dr Who

Fans of the BBC Drama's hit programme Doctor Who are in for another treat again this year as we add some special characters to the Dr Who section along the promenade's famous Golden Mile. Joining Dr Who this year will be his trusty tardis plus those mean and menacing Daleks and other mystery guests.

Triumphal Arches

Blackpool Illuminations are proud to welcome back our Triumphal Arches that will greet visitors as they enter the Illuminations from either end of the display. These illuminated hi-tech arches will not only display information about what's on during the Lights but will be a beacon of information for events throughout the year to keep visitors informed.

Tiffany Lamps, Leaded Lights and Concertina Critters will be redesigned to reflect a more sophisticated lighting system with the latter road section receiving an eclectic makeover of colour and designs.
