Ribbleton Park is the second of Preston's Parks to be a Green Flag winner, again awarded for the high standard of maintenance, community involvement and management of the park. This award was achieved in 2004-05.
The history of Ribbleton Park
Ribbleton Park was established in 1915 when the first four acres of the site were acquired by Preston Borough Council.
Purchases of land in 1921 and 1925, as part of the Health Act, meant that the Park increased in size so that it now covers 18.25 acres and has been maintained as a community recreational space ever since.
Ribbleton Park Facilities
Ribbleton Park continues its role as a community leisure space with two crown bowling greens, a recreation zone (2 courts which can be used for basketball, football, hockey and cricket), four football pitches (3 full size and 1 junior), football pavilion, play area, NPFA Multi-Ball Games Wall, and play area.
There is a community garden for the use of by the local schools, community groups and youth groups, and a youth shelter with art work created by local young people.
The park also has formal tree lined footpaths (light by night), wildlife areas, toilets and car park.
Ribbleton Park Ranger
Ribbleton Park has its own dedicated Park Ranger who carries out daily patrols and inspections, to makes sure with the grounds maintenance staff, the park is tidy and safe. In addition the Ranger organises Environmental, Historical and Creative Events for Schools, Community Groups and general public. Also a site based gardener works with the Ranger to maintain the high standard of the Green Flag Award.
Friends of Ribbleton Park
Established 2 years ago, the Friends of Ribbleton work in partnership with the Park Ranger and the Councils Parks Development Team. Although the Friends play a major role in the organisation of community events and contribute to management decisions, they also help raise funding for improvements and new facilities. The Friends also help to raise the profile of the park.
If you would like to become a member of the Friends of Ribbleton Park, please contact the Park Ranger on 01772 651562.
Community Garden
Ribbleton Park has its own community garden, created with the help of the Neighbourhood Renewal Fund Initiative, 'Growing Fitter for the Future' and Lancashire Small Sites Reclamation Programme. The community garden gives schools and community groups the opportunity to grow their own fruit and vegetables as well as other specially designed garden activities. As a backdrop to this garden is a mural celebrating the sense of parks, growth and community created by the children of Ribbleton Avenue Methodist Junior School with the Art in the Park Project, and is one of a number of bright and cheerful murals on this site.
Ribbleton Park is located on the eastern side of Preston, adjacent to New Hall Lane and Blackpool Rd. It is easily accessible by car, bicycle or foot and is connected to the cycle route. The park is also on the number 16 bus route to Farringdon Park from the Bus Station. The park is a gateway park as it is on the main route into Preston from the M6 Tickled Trout exit (Junction 31).
