The museum was opened in Colne in 1972, and was closed during 2005 to enable the collection to be boxed and labelled. When completed the boxes and showcases were transported to Hendon Mill. The area designated for the museum was re-lit, carpeted, alarmed, painted and a suspended ceiling installed.

On show are swords, kukris, commemorative boxes and plates, models carved in ivory, photographs, paintings, Indian army cap badges and buttons, a large collection of Indian regimental neckties. We have a tiger skin which was shot in the Sauger area, Central India in 1915. Clothes worn by E M Forster when he was private secretary to HH the Maharajah of Dewas State Senior. Many items belonging to Maj Gen A C Curtis, who commanded the 14th Indian Division in Burma 1942-44. The uniform of Field Marshal Sir Claude Auchinlech. Drawings executed at the siege of Delhi in1857, the last flag to be lowered at the Residency, Lucknow in 1947. There are model soldiers of Indian regiments, models of Indian types such as basket makers, bearers, foot vendors, water carriers, snake charmers and many others, brassware, items relating to the Delhi Durbars of 1903 and 1911 There are many other items too numerous to mention.

Road Directions

Off the A56 between Nelson Town Centre and Asda Superstore. Turn up at the mini roundabout by the shop called Complete Runner. Follow under the railway bridge and signposted Hendon Self Storage/British in India Museum on the left.
