Darwen, in the Blackburn with Darwen district, is a friendly market town bordering the windswept West Pennine Moors where you can soak in the magnificent views as you hike, bike or horse ride along one of the region’s myriad pathways. For a breathtaking view of Darwen and the Moors, take a gentle stroll along Sunnyhurst Wood’s seven miles of paths, towards 86ft-tall Darwen Tower, built at the end of the 1800s to celebrate Queen Victoria’s Diamond Jubilee. Then stop by the quaint old Keepers Cottage, which is now a Visitor Centre, Art Gallery and cosy café, Olde English Kiosk. Keen golfers can book a tee time at Darwen Golf Course’s challenging 18 holes, while fishing enthusiasts are spoilt for choice with the numerous waterways and reservoirs in the area. Free walking tour leaflets are available from Darwen Town Hall. While you’re there, why not check out Darwen’s famous market? This indoor market is housed in a Victorian Market Hall and opened in 1871. There are over 130 stalls selling clothes, antiquities and a variety of local produce including Ribble Valley beef and lamb, Darwen sausages, honey and seasonal vegetables. With travel accommodation to suit all budgets, you might want to stay the night and if you're feeling brave, discover the secrets of Darwen’s industrial past on a Ghost Walk through the back streets with renowned ghost whisperer Simon Entwistle.
