Back in the Bronze Age, Colne in Pendle was an important settlement on the Trans-Pennine Ridgeway, a major trade route, although the oldest building in the current town merely dates back to the 12th century! Wander around this building, St Bartholomews Church which boasts beautiful stained glass windows, a 62ft tower and a north arcade that dates from the early 13th century. The churchyard once hosted the weekly farmers market, although these days this takes place at the New Market Hall. Shopaholics should also spend the day browsing the fantastic bargains at Boundary Mill Stores, a huge outlet for fashion and home brands with more than 200 shops including an M&S Outlet, French Connection, Jaeger, Lowe Alpine and Dartington. Colne is surrounded by spectacular, unspoilt countryside which you can explore on foot or bike. Boulsworth Hill is part of Pendle’s Three Peaks Trails, while the Pendle Way and Bronte Way also pass through the area. For an adrenaline rush, take the whole family to Prestige Karting, one of the best tracks in the North. After an active day, reward yourself with a slap up meal at a choice of eateries in the Colne Restaurant Quarter. Then why not see a show at one of Colne’s three theatres?. With bed & breakfast, guest house and self catering accommodation in Colne, you might want to take a short break to explore the area and its surroundings.

What's On in Colne and Pendle

Colne’s most popular event is undoubtedly the Great British Rhythm and Blues Festival, which takes place annually over the August Bank Holiday. Artists from all over the world flock to the town to participate in a range of gigs and ‘fringe’ gigs in pubs, clubs and the Municipal Hall (Muni). Or in July, join thousands of locals as they soak up the adrenaline-fuelled atmosphere of the Colne Grand Prix, an action-packed cycle race around the town’s 800-metre one-way system.

Must See and Do in Colne and Pendle

Visit Colne in early summer when the town is positively awash with colourful flowers – it’s won the North West in Bloom competition enough times to be nicknamed Bonnie Colne! Take the Heroes and Villains Tour of the town with TV presenter and ghost whisperer Simon Entwistle, or explore the pretty surrounding countryside and historic villages on one of Pendle’s Scenic Trails. Don’t miss a visit to Atom, an award-winning work of art on the Panoptican’s Trail, surrounded by breathtaking landscapes.
