Hipping Hall

Hipping Hall is a 16th century country house, set in ten acres of secluded walled gardens in north Lancashire, nestling in the Yorkshire Dales National Park and only a stones throw away from the Forest of Bowland and the Lake District.

The Hall itself takes its name from the 'Hipping' or stepping stones that crossed Broken Beck, a little stream that rises on Ireby Moor, before merging with Cants Beck and the River Lune. The strategically placed 'Hipping' stones allowed travellers to cross the beck and continue their journey following the old pack horse route from Kendal to the mill towns of Yorkshire.

One enterprising individual Robert Thatham recognised the opportunity offered by the 'Hipping' stones and established a Blacksmiths serving those that used the road... who knows, maybe they even provided sustenance and accommodation to those wanting to break up their journey...

In the early 17th century the then owner of the Hall, Edward Tatham married the daughter of a local lawyer from Dentdale and instantly elevated his position in society, building the hall as we see it today and creating a legacy in the process...

Today the Hall is a beautifully restored restaurant with rooms serving the needs of the modern traveller.
